About: “The Visitation” is part of a series of paintings by artist Christus Murphy completed between 1980 and the early 1990’s. The works were inspired by American composer, John Adams born in 1947. Murphy’s John Adam’s series was part of a successful exhibition at Richmond’s Martha Mabey Gallery in 1995. This show coincided with the premier of a work written by composer John Adam and performed by the Richmond Symphony. “The Visitation” was purchased by a couple who now reside in Sausalito, CA. Although the painting has been displayed in multiple homes in the last 20 years, due to renovations “The Visitation” was hid away for safe keeping by its owners. This painting made an astonishing returned to Virginia art scene in 2015 for the Stewart Gallery’s “In Celebration of the Female Figure” show. Alongside newer works by the 84 years old Christus Murphy, this show featured a large catalog of the artist’s older paintings. Among these earlier pieces was “The Visitation”, which vividly captures its viewers’ attention through its contrasting color scheme and dramatic lighting. Capturing a critical event in the artist’s life, this piece conjures up deep emotions from its observers, and stand testament of Murphy’s mastery of oil mediums.
