Dorothy Fagan

Dorothy Fagan works in oil, pastel, charcoal and mixed media. She has always been inspired by the landscape. She paints in a private woodland garden in Virginia, where she is surrounded by natural light, woodlands, beaches, and pastoral landscapes. Looking for new inspiration, she discovered renewed passion for painting through residencies in France (2013) and Italy (2015).
"My experience in France and Italy has given me renewed vision for my painting. Going to an empty studio gave me the opportunity to see only the empty canvas on my easel. Leaving a studio full of partially finished paintings in Virginia ~ I discovered connections between them I couldn't see at home. Coming home, I am able to paint with a wider vision. I am surprised every day by new vibrancy."
An advocate for creativity, Fagan is creating a virtual artist residency based on her experience in France and Italy. Every artist deserves the opportunity to delve deeply into their own creative spirit. It is easy for an artist's passion to become disconnected from what's on the easel. Fagan hopes her program will help artists speak with clarity and purpose.
Fagan studied color theory and graphics earning her B.F.A. in Printmaking and Painting at East Carolina University in 1974. Her landscape pastels won national recognition at The Pastel Society of America in 1978 and Virginia Museum of Fine Art in 1981. Her oils followed suit at the American Artists Professional League national juried exhibition in 1985. Fagan's works are represented by Chasen Galleries, Stewart Gallery and by galleries nationwide.
Fagan has published several books including an autobiography, an adult coloring book, and a poetry and art book. She is currently working on another book based on her residency in Tuscany.
